They like their cocktails, too, snappy creations such as their Abby Basil Gimlet (made with Blue Ice Potato Vodka from Idaho) and a tribute to hard-drinking golfer John Daly, made with Seagram’s Sweet Tea Vodka – Sweet Tea Vodka, lemonade and iced tea. When good beers like that are simply heaped down near the Bud and Coors, you know you’re dealing with a joint that likes its suds. There is a selection of “Craft Bottles” as well (several of which are actually in cans): Abita Turbo Dog, Anderson Valley Boont Amber, Green Flash IPA, Lost Coast Downtown Brown, Old Speckled Hen (in a can) and Murphy’s (in a can).Īnd there are 20 more brews on the menu, lumped under “Domestic & Imported Bottles and Cans.” They include premium names such as Strongbow and Sierra Nevada. Once again, not encyclopedia, but enough. There’s a section of the beer list dedicated to “Belgiums”: Chimay Blue, Chimay Red, Maudite, Delirium and Duvel. There is, for example, the Allagash White, served on draft, an American take on a traditional Belgian wheat beer from the Allagash Brewing Company of Portland, Maine.Īnd indeed, there’s a bit of a taste at Chelsea for the Belgian style of brewing. Though the beer list at Chelsea is far from encyclopedic – it ranks in the low two figures, rather than the high hundreds – it’s also more than sufficient. In other words, the place is lively enough that you feel as if something is going on, but understated enough that you can actually speak without having to shout. It’s a very fine place to go with friends for an adult beverage and an order of sliders, consumed while the Dodgers blow another one on one of the many overhead TVs, in booths where quiet conversation is still a worthwhile enterprise. Which is not to say that Chelsea is a boring spot, it’s just very comfortable being what it is – one of the coziest gastropubs in town. This may be the most laid-back drinking establishment in Hermosa Beach. The food, hip vibe, and decor of this place were wonderful, but it was staff-esp.The Chelsea Pub & Lounge sits at the northern end of what may be the most colorful block in the kaleidoscopic city of Hermosa Beach.Īs you walk the block from Pier Avenue north to the Chelsea Pub, you go past wild and woolly crowds pouring in and out of Rok Sushi, The Shore, The Beach Hut, Cafe Boogaloo and the adjacent Underground Pub & Grill.Īnd then, you climb the stairs to Chelsea – and all that frantic need to party hearty fades into a sort of sophisticated mist. We also had pancakes because, hey, it was my birthday, and they just looked so good! Couldn't finish them but they were perfect. Our waiter brought a comped chocolate cake with candle and the whole restaurant sang happy b'day. I had had the smoked fish on baguette (outstanding) and my husband had an eggwich with some kinda ridiculous "pulled bacon" and the potatoes with rosemary-he loved both and I can vouch for the potatoes (don't miss). ![]() For libations, we had the margarita (get one!) and an off-menu gimlet. ![]() We were seated at the bar which turned out to be fortuitous because our waiter/bartender (Paulo/Pablo?) was just the most wonderful entertainer, mixologist and person. we arrived there was a wait of about an hour so we walked over to the Whitney and bought our tix and went through one gallery before returning. Seemed like a good omen since I have two sons who were once wild and was missing them.
